D O Y O U K N O W W H A T ' S I N Y O U R M A K E - U P ?

i've honestly never paid much attention to what my costemtic products are compromised of until two years ago and again more recently after immersing in a discussion about what goes into our make-up.

When this subject took my interest two years ago I research (online of course!) the affects and harms of parabens and mineral oils used in many cleasners, moisturisers, foundations, shampoos shaving gels, topical pharmaceuticals and toothpaste.

Here are quick definitions of the two:

Parabens - 'Parabens are chemicals used as preservatives, and that’s why they are found in so many products. They are used to fight bacteria and fungus, are widely available, and cost very little to manufacture and use. Nearly all of the parabens used as preservatives are man-made and not naturally occurring' (extract from thegoodhuman.com).

Why are they bad? - one of the many arguments are to why parabens are considered bad includes, but is not limited to the fact that  'Parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen, which is known to play a role in the development of breast cancers' (again..thegoodhuman.com).

Mineral oils - 'It is a clear, odorless liquid, a byproduct of the distillation of gasoline from crude oil. It is a leftover liquid, and because it is abundant it is inexpensive' (extract taken from www.herballuxuries.com).

Why is it bad? - It is difficult to asborb and clogs pores, which slows our skins ability to emliminate toxins. Once the oil is absorbed it is broken down in the liver, passes through the intestinal tract and absorbs all of the fat-soluble vitamins found there. Essentially, it is taking important vitamins from the body which cannot be replaced. (www.herballuxuries.com).

Whilst the actual amount used in products would not be a large quantity one must think about the amount that is being aborsbed by our skin and/or put into our bodies throughout our lives.

These ingredients aside, what really disgusted me is what can be found in out foundations, mascaras, shampoos, eyeliners etc etc..

Lanolin - is the fatty substance found naturally on sheep's wool.

Tallow (not generally labelled as this) -  is a hard fatty substance made from rendered animal fat. These animals are generally road kill or animals collected from slaughter houses. In short, they are boiled and the fat and liquid which rises to the top is used in many cosmetic products. Not to mention, that is what 93% of McDonalds fries are fried in..."natual" and/ or "artifical" flavour..

Bat Guano - bats feces found in many mascaras, lipsticks, nail products, fragrances, cleansing products and the list goes on.

Whilst some may argue these products are "natural" one wouldn't go out and extract oil from a dead animal from the side of the road and smear it on their face..I think not.
